Which subtraction worksheet to choose
- Facts within 10 and 20: kindergarten to 2nd grade. Thinking "what do I add to 7 to make 12?" links subtraction to the addition facts.
- 2-digit, no regrouping: every digit on top is at least as big as the one below.
- 2-digit, with regrouping: every problem needs borrowing from the tens.
- 3- and 4-digit: 3rd and 4th grade, including regrouping across several places.
Teaching regrouping (borrowing)
When the top ones digit is smaller than the bottom one, take one ten from the tens column and turn it into 10 ones: cross out the tens digit and write one less, then add 10 to the ones. Always check by adding the answer to the number you subtracted.
Mixing addition and subtraction
Once both are secure, choose "Addition and subtraction" to mix them on one page. Children have to read each sign, which is exactly what tests and real life ask of them.
