Which division worksheet to choose
- Facts: 3rd grade. Every problem divides exactly, so it practices the times tables backwards.
- 2-digit ÷ 1-digit: the first long division, with no remainder, then with remainders.
- 3-digit and 4-digit ÷ 1-digit: 4th grade.
- 3-digit ÷ 2-digit: 5th grade, where estimating each digit of the quotient matters.
The long division steps
Divide, multiply, subtract, bring down, and repeat. A memory aid many classes use: "Does McDonald's sell burgers?" When nothing is left to bring down, what remains is the remainder, written with an R (for example 47 R 3).
Checking the answer
Multiply the quotient by the divisor and add the remainder: you should get the dividend back. The answer key shows remainders the same way, so children can check themselves.
