Which addition worksheet to choose
- Facts with sums to 10: kindergarten and the start of 1st grade. Use objects or a ten frame next to the sheet at first.
- Facts with sums to 20: 1st and 2nd grade, until the facts come without counting.
- 2-digit, no regrouping: adding tens and ones separately, before carrying is introduced.
- 2-digit, with regrouping: every problem needs a carry from the ones to the tens, the key skill of 2nd grade.
- 3- and 4-digit: 3rd and 4th grade, with the standard algorithm.
Teaching regrouping (carrying)
When the ones add up to 10 or more, the 10 ones become 1 ten. Write the ones digit under the ones column and the 1 above the tens column, then add the tens including that 1. Base-ten blocks make it concrete: trade ten unit cubes for one rod before writing anything down.
Tips for practice sheets
- Short and often beats long and rare: one page of 20 problems a day builds fluency faster than a long sheet once a week.
- Time the facts pages only once the child is accurate, and compare with their own previous score.
- Use the answer key for self-checking: children find their own mistakes and learn more from them.
